Jun 1    Whitefish Pottery/Stillwater Gallery June 1st Gallery Night
Whitefish Pottery and Stillwater Gallery presents our featured artists for the month of June: Tara Wilson, ceramic artist from Montana City, MT and Jack Dykstra, watercolor artist from Whitefish, MT.
Tara has given workshops and lectures across the United States and her work has been shown internationally. Her woodfire work represents the natural world in their surface design, while their forms are reminiscent of figures and bodies. Tara’s pots capture the calm serenity of a natural environment, meant to evoke the peaceful contemplation and reflection one can find in nature. Her gestural forms are a pleasure to admire and to use in everyday life.
Jack has been affiliated with a number of notable artist and painter groups such as the Montana Painter’s Alliance and Montana Watercolor Society, as well as teaching classes, participating in juried venues, and exhibiting in galleries and museums all over the west and Montana. Jack’s subjects range from industrial/railroad scenes, to florals, to abstract paintings, to landscapes; all influenced by a sound foundation in the dynamics of color and light. His use of plein air (or on-site) painting, sketches, studies, and reference photos truly captures the feeling of a scene, giving each painting its own mood and story.
Join us for an opening reception at Whitefish Pottery/Stillwater Gallery in conjunction with Whitefish Gallery Nights on Thursday, June 1st 6-9:00pm. The show will run through the month of June

Jun 8    HOCKADAY ANNOUNCES MANEL ÀLVAREZ: STEP BY STEP - Opening Reception

The Barcelona artist is known for his large sculptures in bronze, marble and granite. He has exhibited all over the world and received commissions for monuments in France, Italy, Germany, Brazil and the United States, in addition to his native Spain.

Àlvarez draws inspiration from the different cultures and beliefs he’s encountered in his travels. He focuses on using lines to create a sense of weightlessness and to convey the energy of the represented form.

Àlvarez’s wife, Linda, was born in Great Falls, Montana, and this exhibition honors her heritage. The artist will donate one of his original outdoor sculptures to the Hockaday Museum of Art to serve as a community centerpiece and legacy for future generations.

The Hockaday Museum of Art is located in the cultural district of downtown Kalispell at 302 Second Ave East. It is housed in a 1904 Carnegie Library building that appears on the National Register of Historic Places. The Museum is a private nonprofit organization, open year-round, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The mission of the Hockaday is to enrich the cultural life of our community and region, and preserve the artistic legacy of Montana and Glacier National Park. Jun 17    Rafting for Refuse
Glacier Guides and Montana Raft has hosted “Rafting For Refuse,” an annual river clean up, since 1997. Every year on a Saturday in late June, we clean up trash at the public river access points and along the river corridor on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River.

Details:
Volunteers meet at 9:00 am at the Montana Raft Co./Glacier Guides office located on US Hwy. 2, 1.5 miles west of West Glacier.
Check in with the office staff to read and sign our “Acknowledgement of Risk.”
Head to the lifejacket room to get fitted in wetsuits, booties and lifejackets.
Group picture.
There will be a brief presentation on “Leave No Trace.”
You will then be divided into smaller groups and shuttled to various river access points.
We pick up the river put-ins, then float the river, stopping to pick up refuse along the way, and then scour the take-out for more trash.
It’s a short shuttle back to the Glacier Guides and Montana Raft office for volleyball and a complimentary barbecue.
The BBQ begins around 2 pm.
There will be a prize given for the coolest piece of trash found!

To join as a volunteer (ages 12 and up), please contact Glacier Guides and Montana Raft at 406-387-5555 or email info@glacierguides.com. Space is limited. Although you can make requests, we cannot guarantee what section of river that a group will clean. Sections of river are chosen for groups based on several factors. Glacier Guides and Montana Raft provides all of the necessary rafting equipment, expert guides, and staff to coordinate the day.

Provided:

  • Splash gear
  • Wetsuits
  • Booties
  • Lifejackets
  • BBQ
  • Volleyball

Each volunteer should have:

  • Work gloves (for picking up trash)
  • Water bottle
  • Warm hat/gloves
  • Fleece shirt/jacket
  • Sunscreen
  • Extra set of clothes for after the raft trip
  • Please avoid wearing cotton if you can, quick drying/moisture wicking material is best.

Glacier Guides and Montana Raft has always promoted a strong environmental message, with an emphasis on Leave No Trace ethics. During the river clean-up, your guides will provide information and insight into issues facing our river system and national park. Exposure and participation in the Rafting for Refuse is even more important in light of growing river use and development pressure. Come on out and help us to preserve our rivers for generations to come!
