Jun 1    Whitefish Review Releases Issue #22 “The Stories We Tell”
Whitefish Review will release “The Stories We Tell” issue #22 on Friday, June 1 with a celebration at Casey's in downtown Whitefish. The new issue features nearly 40 authors, poets, photographers, and artists, as well as an interview with author and CNN anchor Jake Tapper.  The evening will feature readings by William Kittredge, Annick Smith, and Rick Bass. Young writer Joey Bulman will also read from work featured in the issue. Bulman is a May 2018 graduate of Montana Academy. “For this issue of Whitefish Review, we focused on the power of story,” said founding editor Brian Schott. “The stories we tell ourselves, both as individuals and as a society and how that shapes us as human beings.” Rick Bass is the author of over thirty books of fiction and nonfiction. His newest book is The Traveling Feast: On the Road and at the Table with America’s Finest Writers. William Kittredge taught at the University of Montana from 1969 until his retirement in 1997. His publications include stories and essays from Graywolf Press, Hole in the Sky from Knopf, and his share of the credit for The Last Best Place: A Montana Anthology. Annick Smith’s most recent book is Crossing the Plains with Bruno and she was co-editor with William Kittredge of The Last Best Place. Most recently, Smith and Susan O’Connor are co-editors of HEARTH, A Global Conversation on Community, Identity and Place, to be published this September.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with live music. The evening is sponsored by the Whitefish Community Foundation, Glacier Bank, and Good Medicine Lodge. A $10 entry donation is suggested to support the non-profit journal. Whitefish Review is a non-profit journal publishing the literature, art, and photography of mountain culture and beyond. As a recognized non profit corporation created for the public good, it is supported by generous donations, grants, and subscriptions. Jun 19    The Little Mermaid
Beautiful mermaid Ariel should be a happy girl — she lives in an enchanted undersea country, her father is a King, and she has the most beautiful singing voice. But she is a passionate, headstrong teenager, and wants what she cannot have — to live on land. When she falls in love with a handsome human prince, Ariel is more determined than ever to gain a pair of legs. But her only option is to bargain with Ursula the Sea Witch, giving her voice as the price of entry onto dry land. With the help of Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and officious court composer Sebastian the crab, Ariel must wordlessly gain Prince Eric’s love within three days — or lose her soul to the ambitious witch! The Little Mermaid features the beloved score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Glenn Slater, featuring “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl,” “Part of Your World.”

The Flathead Spoken Word Community invites you to a monthly Poetry Slam, preceded by an Open Mic Night. The open mic is open to anyone who would like to read a piece they wrote or by an author they admire. The slam is the competitive portion of the night. Slam poets bring 3 poems they wrote themselves, each 3 minutes or less. Judges rate their poems and audience members are well engaged. There is a prize for first place! This is a safe space for folks to share their work. There is no filter on poems (and therefore may not appropriate for young children), however we ask you express yourself authentically in your poetry and with respect and kindness throughout the evening. We look forward to continuing to cultivate a vibrant, inclusive and connected community with you. This event is recurring on the 3rd Wednesday of every month. See you there!
