| The City of Whitefish is hosting ranger led walks on Wednesdays throughout the summer at Whitefish City Beach. On this date, learn about the Kootenai Tribe, who inhabited this area for the last 10,000 years. Visit Roundhouse Landing and Depot Park to learn about Whitefish’s early years as a railroad town. | Aug 4 Art Walk Featuring Rob Akey |
Join us at FoR Fine Art in Whitefish on Thursday, August 4th from 6-9pm for Whitefish Gallery Night! Our featured artist for August is local painter Rob Akey.
Rob grew up on the Montana prairies and in the Montana mountains. He spent youthful summers working steel gangs, trail crews and harvesting wheat, and has hiked much of Glacier National Park. He paints his native Montana to elevate and preserve her magnificence. Rob is a graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and was the Director of Creative Services for Tonka Toys.
Rob paints full-time from his studio in Whitefish, Montana and participates regularly in invitational, juried and plein air events throughout the country. His work is displayed in galleries across Montana and appears in private, public, and corporate collections throughout the Unites States. He is currently president of the prestigious Montana Painters Alliance. His work has been published in Western Art Collector, The Big Sky Journal, Distinctly Montana and The Whitefish Review.

Come Swim the Fish and support the Wave's scholarship fund which helps support local individuals afford membership so everyone in our community can benefit from health and wellness. Choose between a 1/2 mile, 1 mile, or 5K (3.1 mile) swim. All races take place at Whitefish City Beach on a loop course. Registration is online through August 12, or the morning of the race for a small price increase. All swimmers will have a free entry to the Huckleberry pancake feed as part of the Whitefish Huckleberry Days. Head downtown after the swim and enjoy local art and crafts! | Aug 22 Free Turkish Music Workshop |
| Join North Valley Music School for a free music appreciation event! Turkish Music Workshop Monday, August 22 Doors 630 Show 7-8 Free! Pianist and percussionist Nomad Ovunc leads a workshop introducing the basic elements of Turkish music. Born in Central Turkey, Nomad’s first musical experiences were steeped in the complex melodies and odd rhythms of Turkish music. His subsequent training in Classical music (Istanbul State Conservatory) and jazz (Berklee College of Music, Boston) gives him the unique ability to illustrate the many ways in which Turkish music differs from Western styles, and what makes Turkish music sound “different” or “exotic” to Western ears. During the workshop, Nomad will introduce students to Turkish melodies, scales, rhythms and time signatures. Mare and Nomad together will perform a variety of Turkish and Turkish-influenced songs throughout the workshop to illustrate the musical styles that are being discussed. Nomad Ovunc started his music education in Istanbul Turkey, with eight years at the Istanbul State Conservatory. He received a scholarship to Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music where he majored in Contemporary Writing and Production. Subsequently, Ovunc has collaborated with folk and pop artists, designed sound for video, and composed symphonic pieces that have been performed by the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (under the direction of Stephen Gunzenhauser) and in Boston’s legendary Fenway Park. Both Nomad and Mare are internationally touring, professional musicians and hold degrees from Berklee College of Music. It is their belief that fear begins with unfamiliarity. As hosts, they hope that as we get to know one another, we can honor what makes us distinct as individuals, while also understanding that ultimately we are all one and connect through music.
