With the New Year comes a couple of new programs at the Whitefish Chamber ... the first being a monthly morning networking event -- the "Business Buzz."
Set for the first Tuesday of each month from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at a different local business, the Buzz offers members an opportunity to get caffienated while catching-up on the latest from the Chamber staff ... and sharing the latest on their own business with other local business owners and managers.
So mark your calendars for our first "Business Buzz" of the New Year ... Thursday Feb. 2 at the Cawdrey Gallery, 206 Lupfer Avenue in downtown Whitefish. The Cawdrey Gallery is excited to host the First Business Buzz for the Whitefish Chamber.
Enjoy hot coffee and donut holes from The Spot while admiring beautiful works in our gallery by many artists of the Northwest.

Feb 3    Live Music at The Firebrand Restaurant featuring John Dunnigan
Be entertained by local legend John Dunnigan. If Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor and John Prine were joined together in some bizarre musical cloning experiment, the outcome would be John Dunnigan. This "offbeat" musician and entertainer took the backroads to Montana over three decades ago and never left (he's no fool). His original, often hilarious songs make you think, laugh, sing along and raise your glass in a toast to life. In short, he can put a smile on your face.

Feb 3    Whitefish Theatre Company presents Seffarine
Mediterranean Music of Morocco, Spain and Beyond
The sounds that stir the dry winds of Southern Spain and Morocco, two countries separated by only a whisper of the Mediterranean, are the musical DNA of the beautifully complex music of Seffarine. Seffarine was formed by soulful singer Lamiae Naki, who sings in Arabic, Farsi, Spanish and French, and musician Nat Hulskamp, who plays the flamenco guitar and oud. Their repertoire varies from classical Arabic and Andalusian music to original compositions influenced by the music of widely varying cultures, such as Spanish flamenco, classical Persian music, and American jazz. They are joined by acclaimed bassist Damian Erskine who brings a soulful groove to the band and Manuel Gutierrez who plays the cajón and wows audiences with explosive flamenco dance footwork. Get your passport ready as Seffarine takes us on a lively and enriching musical journey throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East!

Be entertained by local legend John Dunnigan in the Boat Club.

Feb 23 - Feb 26    Whitefish Theatre Co. presents "The Velveteen Rabbit" and "Bedtime Stories (As Told By Our Dad)(Who Messed Them Up)"
Double Feature Theatre!

Two family friendly plays shown together! Adapted from the classic 1922 book by Margery Williams, we begin with The Velveteen Rabbit, a heartwarming story about the transformative power of love. One Christmas morning, a shy stuffed bunny enters the world of a young boy’s nursery. Initially ignored in favor of more modern toys, she waits patiently to be noticed, wondering if she will ever be loved like the others. When the wise old Skin Horse reveals the majesty and mystery of what it means to become Real, the Velveteen Rabbit begins an odyssey of the heart to make a lasting connection with her boy that will endure for always.

The fun then continues with Bedtime Stories (As Told By Our Dad)(Who Messed Them Up)! It's Dad's turn to tell his three rambunctious kids their bedtime stories, but when he gets fuzzy on the details, the classics get creative: a prince with a snoring problem spices up The Princess and The Pea, The Boy Who Cried Wolf cries dinosaur instead, and Rumpelstiltskin helps turn all that pesky gold into straw. You may think you know your fairy tales, but not the way Dad tells them!

Feb 25    Winter Snowshoe in Glacier
We invite all ages to bundle up and join Glacier Institute staff for a snowshoeing hike in this glittering winter wonderland. Even in winter, Glacier National Park is home to beautiful green forests and active animals that have adapted to this intense season. Introductions will begin in West Glacier where we will slip on our snowshoes and travel to the trailhead together. Strolling down the South Boundary trail, we will look for tracks and listen to the stories of the indigenous people who live here. We will discuss the science behind the snow and what unique behaviors and characteristics animals have to survive the harsh conditions. Once we return to the trailhead, we’ll enjoy some hot chocolate as we travel back to the main parking lot. After this program, you will have a new found love for the winter world and all it has to offer.

Feb 25    Winter Tracking Adventure
Winter Tracking Adventure

Winter is one of the best times to experience the Crown of the Continent! Frozen streams, snow pillows, and abandoned trails all leave winter hikers with a sense of primal exploration. Join Garrett Tovey, the Director of Education for Glacier Institute on an educational hike discovering animal signs as we go. Winter offers us an insight into animal movements, more so than any other time of year. Learn to decipher canine, feline, mustelid, and ungulate tracks, as well as the reasons behind their movement.

Meeting place: Glacier Institute main office: 320 Nucleus Ave, Columbia Falls, MT

Meeting Time/Duration: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Itinerary (subject to change): We will meet in the parking lot of the Glacier Institute main office at 9 A.M. From here we will take group transportation to some of the often-overlooked trails in the Flathead National Forest, stopping to analyze and discuss tracks and signs. We will finish at the main office parking lot by 3 PM.

Food: Please pack a trail lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. We will spend the day on the trail.

Equipment: Most importantly are warm clothing layers (synthetic and wool materials only, cotton is NOT recommended), waterproof outer layers, comfortable winter boots, a warm winter hat, waterproof winter gloves, a trail lunch, snacks, water (we recommend at least 1-2 liters), backpack, and sunscreen. We will be on snowshoes for this course. Snowshoes will be available for rent at the meeting location, however if you have your own pair please bring them along. Trekking poles can be helpful for balance on the trail. Binoculars can be useful, as well as a notebook, and a writing utensil (ballpoint ink pens tend to freeze in the winter, pencils and sharpies are best). A small foam sit-pad can come in handy for our lunch break.

Weather: The weather in West Glacier is generally ~10 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than in the Kalispell area, with a much higher snowpack to be expected. Expect cold temperatures, snow, and wind. It is always best to have extra layers than not enough.

Physical Requirements: Moderate. We will be snowshoeing at an easy pace along a mostly flat trail for up to 3 miles. We will stop to identify and discuss winter phenomena and animal sign, and may venture off-trail at times where “breaking trail” in snowshoes will be necessary.
