May 5    Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with local music legend John "Juan" Dunnigan in the Firebrand Restaurant
Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with local music legend John "Juan" Dunnigan in the Firebrand Restaurant.
If Jimmy Buffett, James Taylor and John Prine were joined together in some bizarre musical cloning experiment, the outcome would be John Dunnigan. This "offbeat" musician and entertainer took the backroads to Montana over three decades ago and never left (he's no fool). His original, often hilarious songs make you think, laugh, sing along and raise your glass in a toast to life. In short, he can put a smile on your face.

May 6 - May 7    Whitefish Theatre Company presents "The Harry and Sam Dialogues" (Black Curtain production)
Life Beyond Beer and Ding Dongs

Meet Harry and Sam: two blue-collar friends who like to pass the time posing outlandish questions to one another. Why is life like a Ding Dong? Where do sandwiches come from? Why is reincarnation named after a flower? And, of course, if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear it, does it make a sound? Their dialogue initially sounds like a Monty Python skit, but soon deepens as the men use what they can from their own lives to make sense of what everything means. How are men and women different? How well do people really know each other? Is there life after death? As time passes, the questions, once shrouded in indifference, reveal the men’s characters, eventually exposing a truth that changes their friendship forever. A clever comedy about life and big questions.

May 9    Amazing Place Music Presents Edwin McCain in Concert
Amazing Place Music Presents Edwin McCain in Concert
Tue, May 9 @ 7:30PM
O'Shaughnessy Theater, 1 Central Avenue, Whitefish

Called the “great American romantic” by the New York Times, Edwin McCain has built an enviable career over the past 20 years by balancing his massive pop success with the year-round touring schedule of a tireless troubadour. His hit songs, authentic spirit and surprisingly affable sense of humor keep fans coming back time and time again for nights that feel more like parties with old friends than rock concerts. After recording two of the biggest love songs in the history of pop music and experiencing the success that comes with a television show on Animal Planet (Flipping Ships), McCain now performs upwards of 100 shows annually throughout the US as a solo artist, with his full band or his acoustic trio. Recently, he’s added orchestras to his repertoire, performing with symphonies in select markets where he brings his powerful songs to majestic new heights. “The 15-year-old me would have crawled through a river of fire to be the 48-year-old singer/songwriter that I am today, and I remember that. I am incredibly grateful to be able to do this” McCain said. Those enduring love songs (and wedding must-haves) “I’ll Be” and “I Could Not Ask For More” aren’t just for the romantic at heart; “American Idol” and “The Voice” contestants turn to Edwin’s ballads every single year to help them win over judges and fans alike (just ask last season’s AI winner, Nick Fradiani). Even Justin Bieber has been known to belt out “I’ll Be” during his own concerts. 2018 marks the 20th year of the success of “I’ll Be,” which topped the Billboard charts in 1998 and has proven to be a timeless classic over the past two decades.
David Simmons (Opening), son of Don and Pat Simmons, is an honors graduate of the University of Montana School of Music with additional vocal study in Vienna Austria. His diverse career as a performer and educator has taken him to all 50 states, 19 countries, and 4 continents. He has performed live with Alice Cooper, Bob Hope, The USO, and members of REO Speedwagon, Ah-Ha, Sly & The Family Stone, The Phoenix Symphony, The Schubert Kirche Orchester (Vienna), and the Vancouver BC Symphony Orchestra. In the studio, he has worked with Tony Levin of King Crimson, Tom Politzer of Tower of Power, and producer Gardner Cole (Madonna, Amy Grant). He also had the honor of serving as Music Director, Bassist, and Featured Soloist on tour with Motown Recording Artists: THE DRIFTERS. David’s work in education includes being Education Director and Teaching Artist for Arizona Broadway Theater, Fort Peck Montana Fine Arts Council, Desert Foothills Theater, and as a Teaching Artist for Alice Cooper’s Solid Rock Teen Center, AZ Child’s Play Theater, Scottsdale Desert Stages Theater, Wyoming Council on The Arts, the Missoula Children’s Theater's International Residencies, and of course working with thousands of students, educators, and families as Executive Director and Teaching Artist for UBU. Whether in a major stadium, rock club, concert hall, coffee house, classroom, or the flight deck of an aircraft carrier, David brings a special blend of energy, talent, and engaging positivity to every class he teaches and every concert, conference, and festival appearance he makes. David is father to one son, Niko (an aspiring opera singer), and makes his home in rural Iowa with his true love and fiancé, Tamara.

May 13    Carmen: Opera in Concert

Carmen, Bizet's passionately tragic masterpiece, is one of the most popular operas on the planet. Carmen is widely loved for its dramatic storyline, fine arias, duets and engaging choruses that center around a scandalous romance. Glacier Symphony is incredibly excited to present a concert version of Carmen, a historic opera that presents a tragic romance and strong, spirited leading female character of Carmen, who will be played by the soloist, Pascale Spinney. Glacier Symphony’s orchestra, chorale and multiple guest soloists will perform the wildly popular opera together to create a layered and vibrant musical representation of the story.

However, the opera was not always very popular with audiences. In March of 1875, when French composer George Bizet first premiered Carmen at the Opéra-Comique in Paris, the elite Parisian audience at the time was taken aback by the leading femme fatale, on-stage fighting and dramatized murder. One scathing review after the Paris premiere states, “I won't mince words. Your Carmen is a flop, a disaster! It will never play more than twenty times!" – Jean Henri Dupin. Although the opera was too scandalous for France in the late 19th century, it was applauded in Vienna later that year, and its popularity soon spread to Brussels, London, Barcelona, New York, Saint Petersburg and more international cities over the immediately following years. More complimentary reviews resulted after the opera’s spread to new audiences, even Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky went to see Carmen and called it “a masterpiece in every sense of the word.” Ever since, audiences are fascinated by the melodrama, arias, duets, engaging choruses, scandalous romance and characters, making Carmen the most frequently performed opera across the globe.

Our performance features a full cast of acclaimed opera singers, including Pascale Spinney, Andrew Surrena, Hanna Brammer, Alex Boyd, and Benjamin Sieverding, alongside Glacier Symphony Orchestra and Chorale. The opera will be sung in English, rather than the traditional French version, so many can enjoy this iconic opera and legendary story. Do not miss being a part of history as this opera continues to captivate audiences as it approaches its 150th anniversary!

May 14    Carmen: Opera in Concert

About The Book: From the author of the #1 bestselling book, The Revenant, comes the story of the American West through the lens of the bison. Over the last three decades of the nineteenth century, 30 million buffalo were reduced to twelve. Into that maelstrom rode young George Bird Grinnell. A scientist, journalist, hunter and conservationist, Grinnell would lead the battle to save this species. Last Stand is the story of the death of the old West, and the birth of the conservation movement.

May 20    Averill Hospitality presents Live Music at The Boat Club Bar featuring John Dunnigan
Be entertained by local legend John Dunnigan in the Boat Club.

May 26 - May 27    Bigfork Whitewater Festival

The Bigfork Whitewater Festival will be celebrating its 48th year! We welcome you to join us for this historic, local event as either a competitor or spectator this Memorial Day Weekend in Downtown Bigfork.

Bigfork, Montana is located on the north end of Flathead Lake, where the Swan River spills into Bigfork Bay. The last mile of the Swan River, known as the "Wild Mile", is a class IV section of whitewater. This beautiful and challenging whitewater venue has a scenic nature trail paralleling the north side, giving spectators front row seats for some of the best whitewater action in the area.

The Wild Mile also flows through downtown Bigfork, which offers an eclectic variety of restaurants, shops and galleries. For more information and updates about the festival, keep checking back on our Facebook page and Instagram.

May 27    Wolves of the North Fork Valley - Guided Educational Hike
This course will focus on the recovery and current status of wolves in Glacier National Park and the Northern Rocky Mountains. Since human behavior plays such an integral role in wolf recovery efforts, current wolf politics and western attitudes towards the wolf will be discussed and reviewed. We will spend time looking at and taking short hikes into wolf country on the west side of the Park. By the end of the course you will have a basic knowledge of wolf life history and characteristics, wolf ecology, an introduction to wolf research techniques, and an understanding of the complex politics surrounding wolf recovery in the area and globally.

VIP Behind the Chutes Experience May 27..... $99

Here in Montana, we understand that not everyone has been exposed to the cowboy way of life that is part of our heritage. At Brash Rodeo, we offer an opportunity to go behind the chutes where the cowboys and cowgirls get ready to go up against some of the country's finest four legged athletes. You will see wild untamed action in an unprecedented way. Enjoy the entire show from the top of the bucking chutes or spend part of your time with us and the rest in the bleachers, it's your choice. We need to let you know that behind the chutes you will be exposed to both livestock and contestants, manure and colorful language are both good possibilities. You will gain access to the back pens and have a chance to meet cowboys and cowgirls as they prepare for the rodeo. Please dress in your best rodeo attire. Boots or closed toed shoes are preferred as manure is difficult to clean from the inside of sandals. Tickets are limited to only 8, so get them while you can!

May 27    Averill Hospitality presents Live Music at The Boat Club Bar featuring John Dunnigan
Be entertained by local legend John Dunnigan in the Boat Club.
