Jul 1    Reading the Forest Landscape
Everyone knows that Glacier is a mountain park, but most people don’t realize that two-thirds of it is forested. Gain a new appreciation and understanding of this vast and “overlooked” landscape. Learn to read the forests through recognition of its trees, from towering, old-growth temperate rainforest species on Glacier’s west side to the stunted, twisted, high elevation (krummholz) trees found at the upper limits of treeline. And hone your observational skills as you learn to decipher the stories inscribed on tree trunks and branches by wildlife. Glacier’s forests share their secrets once you know where to look.

Jul 4    4th of July Festivities & Fireworks over Whitefish Lake - 2023
 Weather forces cancellation
of Whitefish fireworks display

Ninety minutes of foul weather put a damper on Whitefish's Fourth of July celebration Tuesday night, forcing cancellation of the annual fireworks display at City Beach.  The show will not be re-scheduled.

"We apologize to the thousands of diehard folks who braved the elements to come out for the show," said Chamber Executive Director Kevin Gartland. "Like them, we were extremely disappointed to have to cancel the display, but we had no other choice."

A summer storm front began rolling-in over Whitefish Lake at about 8:45 p.m. Tuesday, accompanied by high winds, lightning strikes and rain.

Within five minutes, crews preparing for the 10:30 p.m. fireworks show were dealing with swells estimated at 3-4 feet, sending waves crashing over the fireworks barge and nearly capsizing the crew's launch boat.

The boat was able to make it safely to shore, where the crew rode out the storm shortly after 10 p.m., when the decision was made to cancel.

"At that point the wind had calmed down," Gartland said, "but it was still raining and the Weather Service was reporting a continuing chance of lightning in the area until midnight."

In addition, the rain and wave action had thoroughly waterlogged the fireworks cannons and shells, making it impossible to actually "fire" the show.

The Chamber posted news of the cancellation on it's Facebook page Tuesday night, and folks already at City Beach were informed of the cancellation by Park Rangers and local police officers, making the announcement from loudspeakers on their cruisers.

Despite the disappointment of having to cancel the show, Gartland expressed the Chamber's thanks to all those who helped manage last night's rapidly-changing situation, including the City Parks staff, Whitefish Transportation, members of the Whitefish Police Department and Flathead County Sheriff's Office, and the crews from Big Sky Fireworks and Whitefish Marine.

Recognized by the New York Times as one of America's Top-10 Fireworks Displays, the Whitefish Chamber's annual 4th of July spectacular is launched from a floating barge some 300-feet off the shore of Whitefish City Beach, on beautiful Whitefish Lake!

The fireworks display begins at dusk (appx 10:30 p.m.), but City Beach will be bustling all day long with pre-fireworks activity including kayak and paddleboard rentals, a variety of food and snack vendors, and plenty of space to spread-out and relax.

Each year the Chamber looks to our business and philanthropic communities to help fund the show, as well as the insurance, ads, promotion, downtown shuttle busses and other related expenses, which total more than $20,000. Your contribution to the effort is much appreciated … thank you for helping to keep our community’s 4th of July tradition alive!   Click <here> to donate.

July 4th at Whitefish City Beach
Whitefish, MT- The City of Whitefish Parks and Recreation is preparing for another fun-filled 4th of July celebration at Whitefish City Beach with fireworks and food vendors to celebrate the occasion.
There will be numerous vendors at Whitefish City Beach on July 4th including shaved ice, mini-doughnuts, ice cream, corndogs, and barbecue. Vendors will open in the early evening and stay open until the fireworks start.
The Parks and Recreation Department would like to remind the beach patrons that the main City Beach parking lot will be closed to allow vendors to set up. Parking will be limited all day in and around City Beach.
Traffic control will be set up by 7:00 p.m. on roads surrounding the beach area. The boat launch at City Beach as well as the Prevention and Decontamination Station will close at 7:00 p.m. Decontamination must be performed prior to launching in Whitefish Lake for watercraft that have ballast tanks or bags. The boat launch at Whitefish Lake State Park will close at 9:00 p.m.
The fireworks, presented by the Whitefish Chamber of Commerce, will begin around 10:30 pm and will last approximately 30 minutes.
The City of Whitefish is encouraging everyone to walk or bike to the beach to help alleviate parking and traffic congestion. The Chamber of Commerce is offering a shuttle, compliments of Rocky Mountain Transportation, from the O’Shaughnessy Center to City Beach from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
Please remember that the rules of City Beach still apply during the 4th of July festivities. No dogs are allowed at City Beach in both the beach and park areas. No personal fireworks, alcohol, or glass containers are allowed. Please help us to keep the beach clean and pick up your trash before heading home for the evening. Call the Whitefish Parks and Recreation Department with any questions at 863-2470. Have a safe and happy 4th of July!

Their artistic pursuits in the wildlife genre are unique and compelling! Join us for an opening reception on Thursday, July 6th from 5-8pm — the same evening as the July Whitefish Gallery Night!

Amanda Markel specializes in modern equine and wildlife art with expressive personality and pizzazz. Her innovative works in bronze focus on design and the use of attractive lines to play with negative space and incorporate architectural elements or geometric forms.

Julie T. Chapman’s painting process has evolved into what she calls disrupted realism: where subjects are fragmented and the final outcome of each piece is unknown at the start. The journey involves abstraction, drawing, scraping, and re-working — all in a search for the right amount of not enough.

You will see wild untamed action in an unprecedented way. Enjoy the entire show from the top of the bucking chutes or spend part of your time with us and the rest in the bleachers, it's your choice. We need to let you know that behind the chutes you will be exposed to both livestock and contestants, manure and colorful language are both good possibilities. You will gain access to the back pens and have a chance to meet cowboys and cowgirls as they prepare for the rodeo. Please dress in your best rodeo attire. Jul 15 - Jul 16    Birds of Prey - 2-Day Program
Raptors have been immortalized as symbolic heralds in literature, served as important indicators in uncovering the effects of pesticides on wildlife, and they patrol our skies connecting us to an ancient, evolutionary past. During our two days together, we will discuss the life histories, habits, physical characteristics, distribution of Glacier’s full suite of birds of prey. We will focus, in particular, on the Bald Eagle population in Glacier, and why it has risen and fallen dramatically in recent years.

At Brash Rodeo, we offer an opportunity to go behind the chutes where the cowboys and cowgirls get ready to go up against some of the country's finest four legged athletes. Boots or closed toed shoes are preferred as manure is difficult to clean from the inside of sandals. Tickets are limited to only 8, so get them while you can!

Jul 21    David Yarrow Opening Exhibition: Storytelling

Hollman Miller Gallery is pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition with photographer David Yarrow. We are thrilled to welcome Yarrow back to Whitefish for the opening of his newest exhibition, Storytelling, which will include various artworks from Yarrow’s recently released artist book. This new book, also titled Storytelling, illustrates the narrative journey that Yarrow has undertaken. David Yarrow will be present to sign books, meet guests, and give an artist talk.

As the world's number one photographer, Yarrow is known for his layered and brave photography, capturing both wildlife and iconic moments and places in time. His range leaves no stone unturned, whether it be exploring uncharted territory or reimagining the most notable moments in history. When David Yarrow takes a still photograph, the motion in its composition continues to shine through, leaving the viewer entertained, shocked, enamored, and forever finding more details to enjoy. By creating such masterful artwork, he invites viewers to piece together the story he has crafted so meticulously.

In this exhibition, Yarrow will present both his most popular images and some of his most recent releases.

This course will take place within the Two Medicine Valley, surrounded by glacially carved mountains and lakes with glimpses of the iconic Lewis overthrust fault. During our hike we will experience Glacier on the geological timescale, where discussions will focus on the sedimentation, uplifting, and carving that shaped this incredible landscape. The class is designed for those with an interest in the scientific story behind the majestic scenery in Glacier National Park.

Jul 22    David Yarrow Opening Exhibtion: Storytelling

Jul 29    Alpine Wildflowers Guided Educational Hike
The wildflowers of Glacier are spectacular. They are especially beautiful against the rugged backdrop of mountain peaks. Their fragility is even more striking when the adverse environment of their habitat is understood. In this class, our goal is to discover and enjoy Glacier’s wildflowers in an informal and relatively non-technical manner. We will enjoy discovering the diversity of Glacier’s wildflowers–the spectacular and the inconspicuous. Structure and function of plant parts, plant tolerance, adaptation, distribution, habitat, and limiting factors will be discussed as they apply to flowering plants along the trail. Various flower books and keys will be available for review.

Jul 29    Highline Trail Geology Guided Day Hike
The geologic features one can see along the Highline trail offer stunning glimpses of time in Glacier’s history. Our many vantage points provide spectacular views of the classic glacial landscape. Along the hike we will make several stops to examine the billion-year-old sedimentary rocks, describe the processes of mountain-building, and the further action of recent glacial activity. Flora and fauna abound on this trail and wildlife encounters often upstage any discussion of geology.
