Edwin Hubble & the Expanding Universe presentation at the Whitefish Community Center by award winning former science teacher Linda Smith.
A major scientific discussion in 1920, known as the "Great Debate," pitted astronomers with two different views of the universe. Some believed that the Milky Way galaxy constituted the entire universe, with the view that fuzzy light patches observed were simply as clouds within our galaxy, not separate galaxies. Another group of astronomers thought that these light patches were actually distant "island universes" beyond the Milky Way. They thought we were the only galaxy...there were millions of of of other distant galaxies.
Linda will take us back in history to 1920 to find out how Edwin Hubble and Henrietta Leavitt gathered evidence that changed our understanding of the universe and our place in it.
